About

Ruba Hillawi is an oud musician currently based in Ontario, Canada, whose work spans performance, collaborative projects, and teaching. With a focus on Arabic music traditions, her practice explores the intersection of technique, expression, and instrumental storytelling.

As a performer, Ruba has appeared in a range of settings, from intimate venues

such as The Poetry Café (Covent Garden, London) to concert spaces including St. John’s Hoxton Church (London), as well as festivals such as the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival (UK). Her performances and workshops are shaped by a commitment to clarity, musicality, and a deep engagement with both traditional repertoire and contemporary interpretations.

Alongside performance, Ruba is actively involved in educational outreach, giving talks and workshops for school-aged audiences on the oud and Arabic rhythmic traditions. She also develops collaborative projects that reflect a broad musical perspective, drawing from classical traditions across the Arab world.

Ruba maintains an active teaching practice, working with students of varying levels and backgrounds. Her approach emphasizes strong foundational technique, musical understanding, and the cultivation of an appreciation for Arabic music.

Through a combination of performance, creative work, and teaching, Ruba continues to build a diverse and evolving musical practice. She has also held leadership roles within the music community, including serving as Chair of the Taqasim Music Foundation (London, UK).
